Kekoa CrossFit

Kekoa CrossFit!

For a long time, I have been trying to visit Kekoa CrossFit in Schofield Barracks, Wahiawa, Oahu.   They are located on base at the last racquetball court in the Martinez Physical Fitness Center (Building 488).  Kekoa CrossFit is non-profit military affiliate so there is free and open membership!  They follow the main site programming.  They have one class at 9am Monday through Friday, but you can stay as long as you like!

Big mahalo to Megan, the trainer, for letting me in... and for volunteering her time daily to teach the classes!  Kekoa CrossFit has a strong and very tight community.  A consistent group of people attend class daily to workout with each other, motivate each other, and just for the genuine love for CrossFit.  They also hang out with each other outside of CrossFit.  Working out here reminded me of working out at our old Mountain View location.. very garage gym feeling.  They do not have the nicest equipment or very much of it.  Sometimes you have to wait or fight for equipment from other people using the fitness center.  But the atmosphere quickly outweighs the quirks.  The level of passion, motivation, and desire to learn is immense.

Also while here working out with the all ladies class, I was reminded of why I CrossFit.. broken down to the simple reasons.  Don't get me wrong; I love CrossFit and all, but with the heat of the open, competitions, etc, it is easy to get carried away.  I CrossFit to stay physically active, healthy, sane, and because I have a blast doing it.  My favorite component is the strong community/cult/whatever you want to call it, both in and outside of NorCal CrossFit and my blog supporters and readers.  I enjoy pushing myself and others.  The bottom line is I CrossFit to better myself, not to beat the person next to me (especially not with questionable movement!).  The only competition is with myself.  It is a great time for me to reflect on this, especially after my Open WOD2 performance this morning.

I know I normally do a pros/cons reviews of all the gyms I visit, but come on, Kekoa CrossFit is nonprofit.  People like Megan, Jason, and Andrea volunteer a lot of time to even make CrossFit classes possible.  Their time, dedication, and commitment is appreciated.  With that said, this is what the class did:
  • Clean
  • Overhead Squat
  • Bench Press
I got up to 130# on the clean, 135# on the overhead squat (a PR for me!!!), and 100# on bench.  Yea yea.

As a nonprofit, to keep the program alive, Kekoa CrossFit relies heavily on the generosity and motivation of service members.  If you are a DoD cardholder, have some spare time, or if you just want to volunteer, let Megan know.  Here is how you can help.  Thanks for letting me drop in.  I look forward to visiting again!
